What Is Vedic Astrology? A Beginner's Guide

By Anand·April 10, 2026·5 min read

More Than Your Sun Sign

When most people think of astrology, they think of their Sun sign — Aries, Taurus, Gemini. That's Western astrology, which is based on the tropical zodiac (tied to the seasons). Vedic astrology, or Jyotish Shastra, uses the sidereal zodiac — tied to the actual position of stars in the sky.

This means your Vedic Sun sign is often one sign back from your Western one. But more importantly, Vedic astrology places far greater emphasis on the Moon sign (Rashi) and the Ascendant (Lagna), giving a much more nuanced picture of who you are.

Key Concepts

Rashi (Moon Sign): Your emotional nature and inner self. In Vedic astrology, this is considered more important than your Sun sign because the Moon moves faster and gives more specific information about your mind and feelings.

Nakshatra: The 27 lunar mansions that divide the zodiac. Your birth Nakshatra reveals deep personality patterns, compatibility indicators, and life themes that go far beyond what a Rashi alone can show.

Dasha System: Perhaps the most powerful tool in Jyotish. Dashas are planetary periods that unfold in a specific sequence throughout your life, revealing when certain themes — career changes, relationships, spiritual growth — are most likely to activate.

Houses (Bhavas): The 12 houses of your chart represent different areas of life — personality, wealth, siblings, home, children, health, partnerships, transformation, fortune, career, gains, and spirituality.

Why It Matters

Vedic astrology isn't about predicting the future with certainty. It's about understanding the patterns and timing of your life so you can make better decisions. Think of it as a map — it shows you the terrain, but you still choose the path.

When Anand reads your chart, he's looking at how all these elements interact: which planets are strong, which are challenged, what Dasha period you're in, and what themes are likely to emerge in the months and years ahead.
