Compatibility in Vedic Astrology: Beyond Sun Signs

Why Sun Sign Compatibility Falls Short

"Are Leos and Aquarians compatible?" — this is the question Western astrology tries to answer. But in Vedic astrology, compatibility is analyzed through a much more sophisticated system called Kundli Milan (chart matching).

Instead of comparing Sun signs, Vedic compatibility looks at the Moon signs and Nakshatras of both partners — because the Moon governs emotions, instincts, and how we connect intimately.

The Ashtakoot System: 36 Points

The traditional Vedic matching system evaluates 8 categories (Kootas), totaling 36 points:

Varna (1 point): Spiritual compatibility and ego dynamics.
Vashya (2 points): Mutual attraction and influence.
Tara (3 points): Health and well-being of the relationship.
Yoni (4 points): Physical and intimate compatibility.
Graha Maitri (5 points): Mental and intellectual compatibility.
Gana (6 points): Temperament and nature alignment.
Bhakoot (7 points): Emotional connection and longevity.
Nadi (8 points): Genetic and health compatibility.

A score of 18 or above out of 36 is generally considered favorable. But numbers alone don't tell the full story.

Beyond the Score

When Anand does a compatibility reading, he goes beyond the Ashtakoot score. He examines the 7th house lords in both charts, Venus and Mars placements, Dasha alignment, and potential Doshas (like Mangal Dosha) that might need remedies.

The goal isn't to say "yes" or "no" to a relationship — it's to understand the dynamics, strengths, and growth areas so both partners can navigate their connection with awareness.
